Type 2 diabetes has long been recognized as a cause of accelerated aging but the underlying mechanisms linking diabetes and aging are not well understood. Metabolic dysregulation starts years before the actual clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Obesity plays a central role in development of metabolic dysregulation and diabetes. Enteroendocrine hormones, two incretins in particular – glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) – play a vital role in metabolism.& GIP, specifically, has been linked to obesity, especially central obesity. GIP secretion is influenced by many inter-related factors such as diet, gut microbiota, and the endocannabinoid system. Understanding the relationships of these and other factors may lead us to delaying or preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes.
