Acquired Cognitive Impairment
The Acquired Cognitive Impairment (ACI) topic includes research on acquired disorders or conditions leading to the loss or impairment of cognitive function due to structural or metabolic changes in the brain.
Some causes of ACI, such as side effects, metabolic/endocrine disorders, delirium from infection, and depression, are reversible. In other cases, cognitive impairment arising from progressive neurodegenerative diseases—such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal degeneration, and mixed or multiple pathologies—cannot be reversed, but symptoms may be treatable for a period of time.
