Fibroid Tumors (Uterine)
The Fibroid Tumors (Uterine) topic includes research on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of benign tumors, fibroids, and leiomyomas of the uterus.
Uterine fibroid tumors are the most common noncancerous tumors affecting women of reproductive age. These tumors are hormone-dependent, with both estrogen and progesterone named as stimulants or growth factors, and they develop after puberty and regress after menopause. Fibroids are frequently undetected but can cause pain during sexual intercourse, infertility, urinary and fecal incontinence, and bowel obstruction. They are the most common reason women in the United States require hysterectomy.
