Food Allergies

Research Areas

The Food Allergies topic includes research on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of food allergies, but does not include food intolerance and celiac disease. Research on food intolerance and celiac disease is not included.

A food allergy will make the body’s immune system react to food with an itchy throat, hives, or stomach cramps; if severe, anaphylaxis can occur.

Oral immunotherapy (OIT), the introduction of small amounts of the allergen over time, is the standard treatment, though it is time consuming and can have significant side effects.
