Intellectual & Development Disabilities (IDD)
The Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs) topic includes research on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of IDDs. The age of onset must be before 18 years for a disease or disorder to be considered an IDD.
Research focuses on a wide range of IDDs, including common and rare neuromuscular and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Down, Fragile X, and Rett syndromes; inborn errors of metabolism; autism spectrum disorders; and conditions currently and soon-to-be detectable through newborn screening. Research aims to understand the underlying biological bases of IDDs and how they manifest in disability, develop better means of screening and early detection, inform more appropriate treatment and developmental management approaches, and improve overall outcomes for people with IDDs.
