Osteoarthritis

Research Areas

The Osteoarthritis topic includes research on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the tissues in the joint break down over time. It is the most common type of arthritis and is more common in older compared with younger people. Disease severity is heterogenous; some individuals experience only mild symptoms while others experience significant pain, disability, and gradual joint damage.

Risk factors include age over 50 years, female sex, overweight/obesity, prior joint injury or surgery, overuse patterns, joint formation issues, and family history.
