Prescription Drug Misuse

The Prescription Drug Misuse topic includes research on the use of prescription drugs in a manner other than prescribed by a provider. It includes research on the prevention, treatment, and outcomes of prescription drug misuse, addiction, and overdose.

Nonmedical use of prescription drugs includes taking a medication in a manner or dose other than prescribed; taking someone else’s prescription, even if for a legitimate medical complaint such as pain; or taking a medication to feel euphoria. The three classes of medication most commonly misused are opioids, central nervous system depressants (including tranquilizers, sedatives, and hypnotics), and stimulants. Prescription drug misuse can have serious medical consequences, including death.
