Recovery Support Services

Research Areas

The Recovery Support Services topic includes research on the services to support, augment, or encourage the process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness by addressing substance use disorder in addition to or in lieu of standard clinical care. Research on medical services (such as provided by healthcare professionals) and clinical treatments (such as withdrawal management) is not included.

Recovery from opioid and other substance use disorders is an ongoing process, and while effective treatments can help reduce drug use, they often fail to address the broader challenges people face, such as loss of employment or housing, damaged relationships, and the lasting effects of justice system involvement. Recovery support services exist to fill these gaps, but their effectiveness and implementation have not been adequately studied, making further research a critical need.
