Osteogenesis Imperfecta
The Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) topic includes research on the genetics, diagnosis, and treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disorder that causes bones to break easily. OI is also called brittle bone disease.
OI occurs in equal frequency in males/females and among racial and ethnic groups. It varies in severity. The most severe type is associated with death before or shortly after birth. In addition to fractures, OI can cause muscle weakness, loose joints, and skeletal malformations, as well as oral health problems and hearing loss in adulthood.
