Regenerative Medicine
The Regenerative Medicine topic includes research that seeks to develop functional cells, cell components, tissues, and organ substitutes for repair, replacement, or enhancement of biological function that has been lost due to abnormalities present at birth, injury, disease, or aging. The topic also includes research on natural regeneration and tissue regenerated outside of the body for subsequent implantation.
Regenerative medicine is an emerging area of science that holds great promise for treating and even curing a variety of injuries and diseases. It includes using stem cells and other technologies—such as engineered biomaterials and gene editing—to repair or replace damaged cells, tissues, or organs.
Progress in stem cell biology research has opened new opportunities for basic and translational scientists worldwide. But much work remains to be done toward the development of safe and effective regenerative medicine products and to realize the full potential of this field.
