The majority of strokes are ischemic and occur when the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain is blocked, causing cells to die. Hemorrhagic strokes occur when an artery in or atop the brain breaks open, causing the brain to swell and place pressure on cells. Although treatable, stroke is a life-threatening condition that can cause severe disability.
